When your daughter has been in isolation for 8+ months and she says she wants to go to Florida.....you figure it out and go to Florida! Last week I had planned to take all 3 kids to Clearwater Beach (Olivia’s choice) for 5 days by myself. Olivia was looking forward to enjoying the beach, ocean, family time, but most of all Clearwater Marine Aquarium! She’s been there once but couldn’t wait to go back!
As if we don’t have enough examples to share of God working in our lives, it was forecasted to rain the entire week we were gone in Indiana. With Tom being a farmer, that means the chances of him being able to get in the fields and plant we’re slim.....so he joined us! We knew if the weather changed at home he’d head back before us. It didn’t so we spent 5 wonderful, sunny days together! We had to be VERY careful of Olivia being in the sun. Ideally, she should get zero sun! That’s hard to do on a beach vacation so she wore a hat, a rash guard shirt and LOTS of sunscreen! Luckily there were some lovely little blue huts at the beach we could rent so that helped keep Olivia out of the sun. Besides spending time at the beach, Olivia went parasailing with her dad and sister. She also had a dolphin encounter with Nicholas the dolphin at the aquarium. I could go on and on about the week but to sum it up....family normalcy! We spent time with each other, away from reality and just got to be us! Olivia spent so much time just quietly taking it all in! She would stand in the ocean looking at the water for an hour by herself. When I asked her what she does all the time out there she said “I just think about how God created all of this!” Let’s all take a moment every day to acknowledge what God has created! -Megan (Olivia’s mom)

This month marks the 3 year anniversary of Olivia’s original cancer diagnosis. “Olivia has cancer” are never words we thought we’d EVER hear! She’s been through it all in the last 3 years, so close to not making it more than once! Today Olivia is doing great! Of course she has some minor issues that are residual effects from chemo therapy and other drugs but we’ll take that to have Olivia with us today!
One thing that got Olivia through the grueling bone marrow transplant process was the thought of taking a vacation with family to the beach! It is because of this that Olivia created Liv it Up with the opportunity to provide families with childhood cancer patients or children with other life threatening illnesses money towards something they enjoy doing together! Olivia received excess money that was donated to help cover the cost of her bone marrow transplant. Luckily everything went as planned an extended (more costly) stay was not necessary! She WANTS to offer this money to other families to create family normalcy so families can forget about cancer for a few days! If you want to apply or you know of someone that should apply go to www.livitup4kids.com and click the application link! We look forward to hearing from more families! Today Olivia had the opportunity to speak to two classes at Trine University about her story and the importance of signing up for www.bethematch.org. Anyone ages 18-43 can register as simply as sending in a mouth swab. Olivia was lucky enough to have her brother as a 100% bone marrow match, but everyone isn’t as lucky! Register today!
Olivia has always enjoyed doing normal family things as much as possible during her stays in and out of the hospital. If you have a child with cancer or a life threatening illness, Olivia wants to treat your family to an activity or trip that would bring you family normalcy! Go to the “applications” tab on this website or click the attached link to apply!
https://www.livitup4kids.com/application.html All of us in northeast Indiana have been stuck inside for 4 days. It’s been as cold as a wind chill of -50 degrees this week. It seems as though everyone thought it was fun for a day or two....now it’s day four and we’re ready to break loose! Today it occurred to me, this is Olivia’s life. She is stuck at home, away from people at malls, restaurants, and school in order to protect her compromised immune system. If you have seen her out or saw a Facebook post of her out, that’s because we either begged the doctors for their blessing or we decided to take every precaution and let her out in order to keep her sanity! Olivia has really enjoyed all of the school cancelations so she has company all day long...even if it is her siblings!
Today when searching for books that Preston can read to her, Olivia came across this treasure from a month after her birth! The Knox’s have been a blessing to Olivia and our family for years! This is just a reminder of the village it has taken for Olivia to get where she is now! We can’t thank all of you enough for your prayers, monetary donations, gifts, love and encouraging words over our family’s nearly 3 year journey! It’s Olivia’s 15th Birthday today! To celebrate we are releasing the Liv it Up Application! Go to the “application” tab on this website to see requirements! Olivia can’t wait to start giving back to other childhood cancer patients since she was so blessed by all of you!
We made it through the holidays, together as a family and will no illnesses! It was a wonderful couple of weeks with the two younger kids home on break from school! On January 4th Olivia has her last chemo at Riley Hospital! This Friday she will go for a check up and then begin going just ONCE A MONTH for check ups!!!!! In the New Year, we look back on all Olivia has been through and can’t be more thankful for the prayers from all of you and for her amazing strength! She still has several more months of isolation, but now that we have Olivia’s health under control we are excited to announce where we are headed with Liv It Up! Olivia is so excited to start giving back after receiving so many blessings from all of you! We’ll make the big announcement later this week!
Olivia enjoyed decorating trees and gingerbread houses over the weekend with her siblings! Since she spends so much time at home and loves the holidays she was more than “encouraging” us to get the house ready for Christmas!
This week she was supposed to have her 3rd cycle of the chemotherapy Nalarabine, but because of a shortage we are scheduled for next week. The doctors are not concerned with the extra week between treatments. I can only hope the reason for the shortage is that this chemo is doing wonders to cure cancer and everyone wants it! As we’ve mentioned before, Olivia has been able to handle the nalarabine better than any other chemo....no hair loss, no nausea, nothing we can visibly see it doing damage to her body! Her appointments are scheduled for next Monday, Wednesday and Friday and we hope for great traveling weather for the three trips to Indy! Olivia is part of F.I.S.T. (Forever Improving Steuben county Together). This is a philanthropy group for students in the 3 Steuben county school. Olivia was chosen in 7th grade to represent her class throughout her middle school and high school career!
Olivia and FIST member Isabella, made an amazing S’More Pie that will be auctioned tomorrow from 6am-1pm! You can go to www.wlki.com beginning tomorrow morning to see all of the pies in the auction! LOOK FOR PIE #55! If you’d like to bid on it call 260-668-4488 between 6am-1pm! All money raised from the pie auction will go to Shop with a Cop in Steuben County! Day +98. Today is the start of another round of chemo. Every morning of an appointment we drop Olivia off at the front door of the ROC (Riley outpatient center) because it’s less walking for her. Although she has her phone, most days I worry if she has the strength to get there. She insists on walking and no wheelchair! We park the car and meet her in the waiting area of the infusion center where we wait until called back. After weight, height, labs, and possible dressing change then we go to a room. Today we will wait approximately 60 minutes for the pharmacy to prepare her chemo then the infusion is 2 hours. While we wait Olivia has breakfast and takes her 10+ morning pills. After chemo we drive home 2-1/2 hours so we can have family normalcy until we do this again in 2 days! All of this with a smile on her face (99% of the time)! It is quite the journey but what we have learned from this experience is immeasurable!
